I'm really happy with the specs on the vehicles. I need a good smallish suv that can tow small trailers, do well in snow/ice and rain, and be safe because I will be traveling some dangerous roads where deer like to commit suicide on a regular basis. My research has led me to the M Class and it's good looking with lots of features to boot! I know several mechanics who regularly service imports so 'finding someone to work on it' won't be a problem. I've been reading about them having reliability issues, seems like you can get a really nice one or an awful one. Does anyone have experience from owning these or working on them? Please share your insight. This is a car I'm looking at getting 5 years out of at least. The only thing I'm unhappy with in the gas mileage but I guess sacrifices must be made. Any help would be appreciated. :)

Price range is $5,000-6,000 for one with 100k where I'm at. :D I looked at the old Rav4 too, the only drawbacks are that it is a little too small and I wouldn't be able to tow with it.

I would be sure to find one that was well maintained - proof that all services were performed. Replacement parts for Mercedes are far from cheap. If its service history is spotty or non-existent, I would suggest you pass on it.

Gotcha, can do. My VW parts aren't all that cheap either.

I hear ya with VW parts. All parts imports are more expensive than domestics on average, but with the Merc you're a "Luxury Import"! LOL I know gas mileage is a factor too, but have you looked into the Tahoe/Yukon? That would be a great choice for towing and maintenance would be cheaper - but gas mileage in the 4x4 versions isn't all that great. Maybe Trailblazer/Envoy, or a good condition older S-Blazer??

The Tahoe doesn't get a good enough mpg for me, the Trailblazers are nice though. I don't know, I've always favored imports over Fords and Chevys every time. Just a weird personal preference I guess. I've never drove one I've really liked. *shrugs* Kinda wish they would've imported the deisel version of the ML here, dem foreigners hoarding all the deisels...
