The sand will settle to the bottom, leaving the gravel on top. So, depending on depth of substrate & ratio of sand to gravel, you may not even see the sand.

The sand will likely settle, or it will trap gases. Either way not really good for what you are trying to achieve.

I've done play sand mixed with smooth flat black river pebbles for contrast, seemed pretty stable, indeed if you get the sand+gravel mix right you might get concrete eventually:ROFL:.

i tryied it in a gorwout tank or jd's and cons but i think i put too much sand in cause youreally can't see the gravel, but it they are big enough to dig up the sand i think it would look kinda cool

It can be done if you put your mind to it...or just dump both in. :D

Have you considered part of the tank being gravel and then the rest sand? Do it like an oaisis or flat reef.

what like one side sand and then the other gravel that would look cool i think i might do that

Yep, but I wouldn't do it where it looks predictable (straight line where they meet). I'd do a meandering line with, say the gravel in back and sand in front and maybe more gravel to one side of the tank than the other. Accent the gravel or sand with a few larger decorative rocks.
