I have a 7x2x2 and would like to add a Dovii to it.

Plan is, keeping it fairly bare to enable me to keep it clean. Filtered by a large pond filter. No other tankmates.

I want him to grow big, so is it best to buy a small one and grow it on or get something around the 6" mark?

how quickly do they grow? and whats the max size anyone has got in an aquarium, im seeing a few 16 - 18".

any one have any advice?

cheers - whats the growth rate like on them.

also whats the best way to sex them?

personally I'd get about 6 juveniles and grow them out to around 4-6" and then keep the best looking male. at that size you should be able to tell which are the males and which are the females by the growth rate and color.

in captivity I believe around 2 feet is average for an adult male to grow...they usually won't reach the full size of 30" or so.

I think 2-ft in captivity is difficult to reach. I have a wild-caught male I got last June. I sexed him at 4 inches. He was 1.5 inches in June 07 and is 9 inches now. Some folks have claimed faster growth rates the first year. You must remember that the bigger they get the slower they grow. So a 14 inch fish grows slower than a 7 inch fish. Males have spots running horizontally above and below the lateral line.

Theres a few people on the site with dovii around 20 inches. Any bigger than that is very rare.
