Hi guys, I am thinking of building an 72 X 48" X 48" tank, keeping American predators, red tails, arrowana, wolf fish, Jaguars, gars, eels and stingray (if I can mix these)

I am currently in England, i have a large converted double garage with a concrete floor, the space is 25m squared,

The information required

- What thickness glass do I need and what price am I looking at and where's the best place to purchase?

- is it cheaper to have a company build the glass frame for me or should I buy the glass and build it myself along with the base etc?

What type of silicone to use and does this need to be braced at the top of the glass, if so what type and how much do braces and silicone cost?

What is the most cost effective way of running this 2492 litre tank, I will also build 2 sump tanks and connect pipe work but other then that what's the best way to save on running cost to ensure my bills stay down, I.e type of external filters and types/ways to heat the tank and also lighting. All must be energy efficient, also how do I oxidise the tank.

I will be using breeze blocks to gain heigh off the floor with a ply sheet over the top building a base around these with a sliding bottom to enable me to keep the sumps, externals and any other equipment underneath.

The frame around the tank will be timber and frame, does this need to be tight to the tank to give extra reinforcement? I will have a removable hood with a glass unit which will be transparent on every side.

Any issues in the plans, any costly maintinence/upkeep and running costs I may stumble on, any better ideas, please feel free to query !

Let's all advise me and help with my project to get the best finished product, your knowledge and experience With my money and hard work to create a great tank suitable to keep any fish in need of re homing.

Help guys!

Thanks

Are you wanting a full glass tank or a plywood tank with glass window? Sorry, I am just having trouble with the way you worded it.

Hi guys sorry I am building a full glass tank but putting a frame around it just to give it extra support and some more decoration, I would need 4 sheets for the sides and a double sheet for the base I imagine. Sorry I should have made that more clear

You should build a plywood tank and have front and side viewing panels it will be so much cheaper and easier. You could do 1/2" glass if you don't go more then 30" tall with the viewing panel. I would go longer if you want red tails etc. I have a red tail, arowana, sting ray, gar, tiger shovelnose and just built a plywood tank 8' long 4' wide and almost 3' tall with a 1/2" thick 30" tall viewing panel that is almost 8' long. For my filtration I have 3 55 gallon drums connected with 3" pvc with 3 matala round filters then alot of K1 fluidized bed

How much did the base unit and frame cost you altogether, I'll consider a 2 glass sided ply frame however needs to be 48 inch high to give my garage the look I'm going for

If you're going for a all glass tank, just buy a custom made quite alot of companies in the UK can do that for less then you would be able to get the glass for

But it is still going to cost you a fair bit due to the height of the tank, your going to need some really thick glass for 48 inch

At 48in. high the tank will need to be made in 25mm glass, preferably with a double 15mm thick base, and yes, it will need bracing, again in 25mm glass.
