The LFS. has just got a shipment of tiny sterlet stergion around 5-7" long for about $100.00 each. ive never had one but they look awsome and im thinking of getting one for my 75g till next summer ,then it will go into my pond. has anyone out there have any advice or know a bit about their behaveior i researched there water cond. but i dont know what to expect when it gets in the tank...thanx:headbang2

This thread will do better in cold water/native.

But from what I know cold water when young possibly even salt added but do a search and you should find the answers. I know when young there is a trick to getting them to survive/thrive.

Very few ever manage to reach adult size. (even less so than with other fish) I've personally seen one in a pond that was over 30"

Diet..temperiture and water quality seem to play a big part in their survival. I looked into getting one a few months ago and decided against it.

The price seems a bit high...the last one I saw for sale around here was a tank full of 4 to 5 inchers foe 24.95

So do u guys think it should do well in the 75g for the winter till spring?? ive heard they r pretty hardy fish that can survive in a wide range of water cond. and survive in water temps. upto 77f, what do u guys suggest i do ,give it a shot of save the money???

I think if you study up on them then sure get one. But tempurature is a major factor in surviving when young so I would use the search function of this site to search for sturgeon info. There's some good info that's been posted about getting them to survive I just don't remember it all.

They live in a cold temperature environment. When i asked the LFS here that had one, he told me to get a chiller before buying it.

i saw one around 4' in a circular tank in Japan before..it was at a fish hatchery. it was with other sturgeons and a albino rainbow trout, and some other natives.

but the sturgeons were just on the bottom not even swimming..so i'm guessing a pond would do...depends on the size of the pond though..
and i don't know if he wasn't moving becuase he's nocturnal or not.

the water temperature in the tank must have been really cold because the tank was foggy on the outside..and the tank was "sweating"
