I have a 180 gallon tank I was told that a FX5 would be a good filter for my tank but I know very little about it!!!! How's the maintenance on it and the lifespand of the fx5 itself ???? Any info would help Thanks!!!

Very nice powerful filter that is self priming and has a computer chip that allows the filter to purge accumulated air daily and adjust the pump motor over time as water flow through the filter changes due to accumulation of debris. What is your stock/What do you plan on stocking? You will likely want more than just the FX5 on your tank if you are like most of us here and want tons of filtration to reduce maintenance on any one filter and have extremely clear water.

have one on my 75, listen to the forums and scrap everything but the ceramic rings.

i have like 8 bags in my 3 trays hahaa. best for bio, my mech is an overflow with bioballs.

plan on having 2 fx5s on my 125 along with a sump.

Scrap everything? Are you suggesting taking out the filter pads?

I have one on my 75 gal with two 6"+ plecos, one dourado catfish 6", two tigs 4-5"...works great almost maintenance free. I haven't cleaned out ceramic ring, sponge pads, charcoal for like 3 months and still no problem or clogging. I'm due..I should do it this weekend.

It is a good filter. The only thing I can not say is how durable it is. My Ehiem(s) have been running for at least 15 years with no problems. Do I expect the same with the Fluval. No.!

Then why would you buy a fluval?

I bought two FX5's for my 210g that I'm setting up. I purchased pond matrix as media. I figure that two of these should work quite well for my needs. With the budget I had it was either one Ehiem or two FX5's, I went the FX5 route.

It's pretty powerful and reliable. You may fall into some issues where you would have to clean the propellers if something something gets stuck but it's an easy fix.

I am running two FX5 on a 135 gallon tank... it works perfectly fine and the filtration is excellent.
