Would kelberi or azul work in a 300 gallon? I plan to have some geophagus and satanoperca mixed in (big eartheater fan) How big are the fish they can swallow? I know ocellaris and monos get quite massive. I have heard Orinos are very slow growers.

Dont keep them hungry. And your going to either like them. Or hate them. The smallest species is kelberi. few kels and azul can be fine. Orino are kinda A-holes imo. but im no expert. Let the real cichla keepers chime in

A few things you may want to think about are:

Will this be a cichla only tank?
If not, what else are you planning on keeping? The species you listed are ok but watch stocking levels. Sometimes compatability issues arise.

Filtration may need to be upgraded as these guys eat a lot. Also understand that these fish do get big and are measured in pounds, even kelberi. Your tank filtration will need to handle a large amount of bio load eventually, and even more so in a mixed community tank.

I personally love orinos. Kelberi are beautiful as well. Be careful keeping temensis as they can get very big. Pinima can also get very large. Monos, ocells, orinos, kels, intermedia (shhhhh), all should be ok with low numbers in a 36" wide tank imo.

I would say go for it and make sure to learn along the way.

We're all here to help - as long as you post pics of your progress!

I plan to have 1 azul, maybe 1 kel. With an assortment of geophagus and satanoperca. (1 geophagus altifrons, 1 geophagus brasiliensis, 1 satanoperca mapiritensis, 1 satanoperca daemon) and a crenicichla sp. venezula male and female pair. Also may have a few exotic plecos in the mix. Filtration will be a Rena Xp4, Eheim 2262, Fluval FX6 and a75 gallon sump.

I keep two Kels in a 180 with a trio of red geos and they do fine. Just make sure your geos are full grown or close to it. I had a azul in with them too but he died by choking trying to eat one of the smaller geos. Was super bummed. The geo is still alive too, haha
