Savannah monitor. What are the main ups and downs of these species? I already have an ornate nile as most of you know but am I right that these are more docile? Just want a few facts about them really. And are they tamable to a handling standard?

Cheers,
Keith

Geez, I had one about 20 years ago. Great pet and easy to tame and handle as long as you get it young. Its a dream compared to a nile, I know that factually! Got the whip marks to prove it. I was living in Tahoe at the time and when I had to cut his nails, about the only problem, I would turn the heat down and he'd slow to a crawl and get his nails done up. Recommended.

So im experienced enough with monitors for a sav then? lol What substrate do they like? Any fave insects? Need a UVA/UVB bulb or a heat bulb suffuciant?

If you can keep a nile you can keep a sav. Mine liked roaches more than crickets, but he would eat anything. He also liked boiled eggs and infertile eggs from the petshops cockatiel eggs.

Thought someone was gonna say roaches lol just to say, my nile absolutly hates them, he will tail whip, scratch, left hook, right hook but will never bite or eat them, he just wants them dead lol

mine is on soil (fertilizer etc free) and it works very well for digging. As for taming i personally dont like the bath tub method some people use, I have been using in cage interactions with mine and it is taming down quite quickly. Also, mine will eat pretty much anything but seems to like crickets and hard-boiled eggs the most.
