This would be my 1st attempt,How exactly is a native tank different from a Tropical tank??I know Temp is alot different but what else is???Do i need a heater??Can i get "Natives"on Cichlid sticks??Can some Natives live with certain "Tropicals"like Oscars,Marbled Pims,RTC/TSN CATS??I knowb that this might sound like a stupid question but i am seriously thinking about doing this. Thanks in advance!!

Its great to see another person hopping on the Native fish wagon. Cheers!:grinno:

To answer your question about keeping these other types of fish with your natives is a matter of how big those Oscars and/or RTC's are.

The same rules apply....If the natives are too small they will get eaten or vice versa.

No heater is needed.....Dont waste your time with heaters. About the artificial food, im pretty sure you can get them on cichlid sticks....But that also depends on how big they are when you get them or how small they too....Its easier to train a little Largemouth Bass to eat artificial food as opposed to a 1 foot beast thats been devouring live food his whole life.

Most natives are pretty tough. they should do fine in a warmer tank if you acclimate them long enough. not too warm though. which fish are you thinking?

I went native with green sunfish and never looked back. Great fish and easy to keep.
Don't need a heater and they will eat just about anything. They are plant friendly and are beautiful to watch. Best native to raise IMHO.

lmbs, smbs, and sunfish are usually quite easy to accustom to pellets. i know that lmbs and bluegill(a species of sunfish) can withstand a wide variety of temperatures, as they are found all over the US. my bluegill is in a heated tank and he likes it. lmbs are accustomed to warm water as well, they live in florida and other warm places. however, DO NOT keep smbs in heated water. they like colder water than most fish and by putting them in heated water you will stress them out, increase their metabolism, and possibly increase their heart rate. hope this helps!

other then tempature pretty much nothing, and most natives can be kept at warmer tempatures, i keep 3lmb and 1bowfin at 78* (ive kept the tank at 81* before) ive also kept pumpkin seeds, rock bass, and yellow perch at that tempature. i havnt kept mine with any large cats but i have a few oscars in my tank. and all of them eat hikari cichlid gold.
