Hey Guys, im usally in the New world section but I have drifted off to the darkside :) I got a nice 180g with some mixed fish all small and thought about growing out a ln Azul and orino or kel. I have only owned a mono before and hit 14 inch fast before I got rid of him.

Aside the Azuls captivating look, what else do you Azul keepers love about them? Do they differ in anyway from any of the other species of Cichla?

How long do I have before these beasts hit the 2ft mark?

The asian LFS in my area gets in some pretty nice Cichla stock from what I have seen and heard so this is my source.

Appreciate the feedback MFK's

I love azuls because of their pattern, the blue coloration, and because none of my azuls put up with aggression from my other bass. Azuls are one of the faster growing species, not quite as fast as Tems or Pins but probably the next fastest. Imo, they grow fast up to 10-12in and then they slow down a little. Depending on what size you buy it at you should be fine in that 180g for a while. I think it takes 2-3years before you hit 20-24inches. I bought a group of 5" azuls from Rapps may 2012 and now the largest is 14"

Imo cichla species differ by aggression, personality, and sensitivity. Azuls pretty much fit in the middle as far as aggression and sensitivity, and ime most cichla have great personalities except Wc Kelberi.

Thanks brother, I will definitly be picking up one for now. I agree there look is spectacular!

I had 6 azuls. They did not grow any slower or faster than my brokopondo or my pleiozona. I for one was not that crazy about there looks so i sold them. I liked my pleiozona and orinos much better.

I have 4 right now between 5-10" and they are just very personable. As stated by some one else, they don't take any crap from other cichla, but they are pretty mellow. Especially compared to my Orino, he's a d*ck. growth rate isn't outrageously fast but it's not slow. I've noticed about 1" a month, a little more since I started feeding massivore.
