hi all, i have always kept fresh water fish in the past and i am now thinking about starting a salt water setup

i am looking at a jewel rio 400 setup i think thats a 5ft tank

anything i need to look out for or any advice offered would be great !

thanks

its a bit more complicated then that lol. Are you planning on corals?? If so its a must to use RO/DI water. This is a pure source and leaves all the contaminants of tap out of the tank. Second a good salt mix will be well balanced with nutrients, meaning that water changes should be able to support life of corals and fish without the additions of certain chemicals.

Research lol, read read and read some more. Get your equiptment list straight, get dimensions of the tank down, and go from there with cycle. fish wont happen for a few months after the first drop of water hits the tank, depending on how fast your add sand and rock.

If you can go into more detail on what you are actually trying to keep in this tank that would help a lot, but as far as basics go:
-get good test kit
-LR/LS (you can purchase dead rock and sand if your low on $$, then just get a cup of LS and some rubble rock from a more est. tank to seed yours)
-Hydrometer to measure gravity level
-Good filter (canister/sump/fuge)
-Skimmer (backpacks are good)
-PH (for water movement)
-A good salt mix (bucket and spare PH)
-and most important is for you to have A LOT of PATIENCE!
