Hey all!
I was planning to set up a shrimp tank to keep Cherry shrimps and maybe crystal shrimps as well.As far as I know,I'm unsure about the water quality, can I just use tap water + dichlorine for them?If so,what temperatures do they need?Lastly,am I able to use an undergravel filter, as well as feed them Algae pellets that are meant for Sucker fish? Thanks!

Cherry red shrimps are more forgiving with temps and will do well with temps 28'C or Below...

Crystal Red Shrimp on the other hand prefer temps 25'C and below...

As for under gravel filters, yes they can work, but just make sure whatever substrate you place on top of it wont have any gaps large enough for baby shrimp to get sucked into the filter...

As for foods, algae wafers may work, but you'll still probably want to get special shrimp food for the added calcium to help them molt better...

Also make sure you have a cycled and stable tank, as crystal reds tend to be very unforgiving to bad water quality...

Crystals prefer remineralized RO water and won't breed for you outside of a fairly specific set of water paremeters.

I guess that depends on where you get your shrimps from...

Most high end breeders here have adapted their shrimp to do well in normal tap water that has been de-chlorinated...

I dont even personally treat my tap water anymore and my crystals still breed for me with high quality diet, clean water and the correct temps...

Week that's news to me, I've never heard of decent quality crystals being bred in non-RO water. I just learnt something.

well for here, they have been in circulation over in HK for over 10+ years now, which is why these breeders have tried to lower their requirement without losing quality...

So i mean unless you are talking about an absolute perfect SSS grade shrimp from Japan then yeah maybe they still do it that way?

Oh man, you're in Hong Kong. Yeah it's possible that the shrimp you have there are much hardier than the ones we have as they're relatively new over here. But no, I wasn't talking about SSS grade or anything :P

P.S. I find SSS to be the ugliest, why are they graded higher?

I've only seen true SSS grade shrimp from Japan a few times over here...

But their quality is unbelievable, their shells are so thick and solid they almost dont look real...

You could literally point a flashlight at their bodies and no light will penetrate, its almost like they are made from acrylic or something...

Their is no gaps between the colors, and patterns are very pronounced and balanced...

But the price tags they came with were just as astronomical at between HKD $10K - 25K USD $1280 - 3200 a piece..

I've heard from breeders the reason they cost so much is coz chances of getting one of this quality is 1 in probably 100's of thousands of fry...

And since even if the parents are high grade never guarantees top quality off spring, so a lot of culling goes on...

Last but not least, i've also heard really top breeders will try and only breed shrimp from certain blood lines if you will...

So all this goes towards the price...

But now a days average good quality shrimp are fairly cheap now which makes my life easier and happier...

^ depends what you are after, and how much you're willing to spend...

Some CRS keepers go for pattern, others for color, then there are those that just aim for the highest quality they can get...

If you want a shrimp empire, start out with a good amount of both males and females and hope for the best...

Since CRS tend not to be the fastest breeders out there...
