I have a spare 5g with a T5 15 watt bulb and that's it. It is acrylic.

I have a few q's

What can i put in there? (something predatory with personality)

How much is live rock?

how often do i have to check salinity?

What should the pH be?

How much would a decent 5g SW cost?

I would like to replicate this except 5 times smaller : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=POmBh1x6jTQ

Thanks

I have a few q's .... alright

What can i put in there? ..... almost nothing. Though a BABY snowflake or moray could live for a couple of weeks till you upgrade. A baby mantis shrimp would actually be really cool. Check them out on youtube.

How much is live rock? 6-8$ a pound LFS. 3-5$online .... 2-3$ on craigslist.

how often do i have to check salinity? Thats up to you. I check mine 1 once a month with water changes.

What should the pH be?8.0 - 8.2 is what i shoot for. puffers need a good 8.2

How much would a decent 5g SW cost? Live rock .... 15$ MAX thats overpriced though. Sand ... 10$ because they dont make that small of bags. Salt 6$ . Salinity scopes are cheap over ebay... 20$ or 100 -60$ at an lfs. I recomend one. A ten gallon would be cheaper to set up , because of the save cash with bigger tanks im sure you know.

I would your looking at 40$ to set up a ten gallon. Or your 5 gallon might be a little less (5$ less).

I'm in agreement with TheCanuck, there is just about nothing you can put in a 5g and no preds (most if not all preds get rather big) its salt water, just think about it, its from the oceans. Oceans are huge, therefore things that live there have more freedom to grow. You need a bigger tank if you want preds, and even if you want to do a reef you need bigger, this is just to small, you could only have a few inverts like shrimp. Sorry to say, but still look into it.

try a mantis shrimp

predator - yes
size will work too
and species only so no over crowding just good ole shell smashing

he could do the mantis shrimp but any upgrading/ adding anything else to the tank will get totally demolished. I would do inverts like hermits, shrimps 1 piece of live rock
or like a featherduster, some kinds of snails
or shrimp/ crab only tank would be cool and if you get bored you can eat it( i wouldnt... but to each there own)

With a mantis shrimp he will need a larger home as he grows. Also i wouldn't do a hammer mantis cause the chances of him shattering a 5 gallon are very possible.

there's more than one species you know?
a G. smithi would only be about 3" long and so it'd be less likely to break anything

True but how often do you see those? I have neve seen anything besides a peacock at an LFS. This is a good suggestion though.
