"The Wolf Cichlid is a large deep-bodied fish reaching up to just over 28" (72 cm) in length. This cichlid has a large mouth and big teeth that show this is a voracious predator. They can have a life span of well over 30 years with proper care."
is this a joke? can anyone back this up? are there any cichlids for that matter that will live for 30 years?

I have not heard of any that lived that long. I hear lots of catfish doing that. Oldest I have heard of was an 18 year old Oscar.

Not a fish but if I remember correctly marimo moss balls can live for 200 years and get as big as soccer balls.

I’ve read a few times about koi living up into hundreds of years.

Wasn’t there a pacu that was semi famous for living 40 plus years in a 75 gallon tank or some such thing as that?

A lot of times with fish the larger a fish can get the longer lived they are.
So is there any information on life span for some of the larges cichlids, Emperors , umbees, or Dovii?
I’m sure we have some members that have had these for years.
Anybody know how old Mel’s big Dovii was?

Boulengerochromis microlepis (Emperor cichlids) are the exception in the cichlid world, although they are arguable the largest cichlids in the world (over 36"), they normally only live 3 years, and grow at an incredibly fast rate. Much like salmon, once they spawn and raise the young, they die,.
There was a dovii, named Pablo that was supposedly one of the first dovii brought to the US, and owned by Guy Jordan that lived decades and reached over 24 ", died in 1978.
I don't understand why is seems surprising that a cichlid like umbriferus that reaches @ 30" could live 30 years.
I have had many much smaller cichlids live 10 years in my tanks.

I would believe they could potentially live that long given proper care and some luck. But I have not heard or seen evidence of any that old. Would be interested to see the oldest cichlid someone can find. I've had buddies who have had larger species for close to 10 years. Have seen plenty of people post 10+ year old cichlids on this site as well. No idea the oldest cichlid I've had but I have had some large wildcaught guys that I bet were up there.
