No, that's about what all of them look like, with varying sizes. They're not typically left off and it takes a fairly small fish to get in there unless it's a really big pump.

I had just picked up a circulation pump, after watching one of the BRStv videos, about them.
The reefers use the guard to keep crustaceans from getting ground up in the prop.
I was impressed with the Sicce pump to replace the Laguna that was taken out in a power surge, so I bought this Voyager II as a backup for circulation, just in case it happens again.
Supposedly does 800 GPH and cost about $50.
I hadn't tried it yet, but looked after seeing your pic. It already has a protective guard.
