how much do they eat in the wild?
good example: Any Ampholophous

Be great if we have National Geographic video focused on each of the cichlid breeds and talk all about them in the most knowledgeable way:drool::drool::drool::drool::drool: for 24 hrs! all day following one fish. *dreaming*

So if you know. Please teach the knowledge with fellow SA/CA cichlid care givers. Thank U

Midas cichlids live in the regions of Nicaragua and Costa Rica. They live in standing or permanent bodies of water such as lakes and slow moving rivers. Midas cichlids ambush their prey which can be small dithers or any smaller fish deemed edible partial to the region they live in. They normally attack their prey on rock bluff walls and use boulders or rock formations as an ambush site and also they call this area home. They are omnivores not carnivores so they do feed on various plant life too such as vegetables or fruits again partial to their area. (They aren't going to be eating wild strawberries in Costa Rica are they now ?) which can be anything they deem edible there is really no specification to what type of plant life they eat. Hope I've helped

U da man. basically we can already move on to the next fish lol

but to know better, how and how much?
Do they every minute look for food because they are always hungry?

or do they eat one time full and relax? If they do that, how many times a day average?

I want to learn the natural diet and then I spoil them with the natural diet as the foundation.

Do they often chase food or eat plants? How much activity on the average? I dont expect answers but I hope somebody knows.

They just eat until they are satisfied or when they have a chance. They don't have a grocery store or a breakfast lunch and dinner timer to abide or go by they are opportunistic feeders which means eat as much as they can when they can and when they have a chance they have no set time and no set amount to go by

If you are really interested, Willem Heijns has a DVD available that shows Amphilophus hunting in Nicaragua.
And although I have not seen Amphilophus in nature, I have watched, and snorkeled with Jack Dempseys, and number of other cichlids hunting in cenotes of Mexico.
The ones I have seen hunt missed at least 9 out of 10 strikes on the live bearers they are surrounded by, and in between seem to graze on algae and aufwachs, which may end up being the major component of their diet.

Hey bro I have a quick question its a matter of my bichir. He is young like small and he keeps getting close to my gar and now my gar is getting closer to him and is scaring the **** out of me because the gar is like expanding his bottom throat like he is threatening him to back off. I don't want him to die tonight because in the morning im going to get a 10 gallon at meijers but is it safe to scoop some water of the aquarium into this big bucket and plug a filter in it and put my bichir in there sorry for how late the txt is but its freaking me out dood. I sent this in a text to a friend but its late so give this a try. the gar is a 11 inch Florida and the bichir is the teauglis or Dino bichir I can't spell the first name to it. But to add on to the story the gar snapped its mouth like it was getting air but near the bichir. That's when I put my net on the gar to push him away. Help would be great. !!!
