This thread is for varanio and anyone else with knowledge and experience about them. I dont have any experience with monitors, but I cant help but ask about these magnificent monitors. I am aware at how difficult they are to properly hydrate and how fragile they are when first acquired from the wild. Once you get through that stage how difficult are they to care for on a day to day basis? How do they compare to panther chameleons? I was thinking a 4'Tall 3-4' Long and 2-3' Wide cage for a macarei (sp). I'm really nervous not only about the cost of them but losing the poor monitor to a simple mistake. So please shed some light on the subject. thanks

What is it about the tree monitors that interest you? Is it the fact they spend most of their time arboreal? There's a lot of terrestial monitors that don't need to be imported that would spend just as much time in the branches if you let them.

Some people automatically assume that terrastrial reptiles are not capable of becoming arboreal, when in fact it is just thaty they don't need it for their psychological needs; but they would spend just as much time if provided.

If you really like the species in question, varanio is probably the best person to ask.

Well the reasons why they interest me are that they are DROP DEAD GORGEOUS!!! I also really like how they stay on the small size as far as varanids are concerned, Then that ties in with the fact that they need a smaller cage then the other monitor species. I feel that if I was to acquire one of these every day I saw it I would feel like I was looking directly into the rainforest without being there. I wouldn't feel like I was cramping them especially If I cover the sides of the enclosure with cork bark, greatly increasing their surface area. I agree with your point about them being imported. I personally don't like that either.

I was just wondering why you want them. The only reason why I ask is that some people only see things one-sided. It is like those people who want 'big snakes' that is in the 7'+ range that don't consider options other than Burms and Retics like Gopher Snakes, Boa Constrictors, Woma, and so on. Or people who want arboreal snakes don't think that Cornsnakes would spend most of their time in the branches, but they do.

I know my Ackies always spend their time in the "trees," and then burrow at night.

Anyway, tree monitors are drop-dead gorgeous indeed. Like I said, ask varanio about it. He would know more about the tree monitors in the pet trade.

Yea I completely agree about the burm and retic comment. I am not ready for a 4' monitor yet, I'm deadset on the ackies but I am just inquiring about the tree monitors for now unless I find a great deal on a healthy LTC tree monitor. Thanks for the input though

Just curious...why is this your last thread?
I was thinking the same thing. Never stop asking questions here, that's what this forum is for. The only time anyone ever has a problem with someone asking tons of questions is when they ask the same or similar question repeatedly and never listen to the advice. Theres someone in particular that fits this bill and he keeps large cichlids...
