I am currently planning for a pond that will be built this spring/summer. My dad and I had built a 'pond' two years ago. It was tiny(200 gallons, maybe), unplanned and we didn't even bother putting the filter in it. We got some cheap feeder fish and threw them in, and, they survived, until winter came.
Anyhoo, my mom doesn't like this giant mud puddle that we made, so we are moving it to the other side of the path, and I have vowed that it will be 1000x better than the previous. I have come up with this plan, what do you think?

I am going to keep some goldfish, probably just a few sarassas and shubunkins, nothing too fancy. Perhaps a small koi that will be relocated upon growing too large. As for a filter, we have a Laguna Powerjet 2900 Pond Pump(rated for ponds up to 5800US gallons) and a Laguna Powerflomax Underwater Filter Box.

Any thoughts, concerns, suggestions?

Go big....

That design might be 3-500 gals.

UPDATE: After talking with my parents, we have decided that it should be bigger. It is looking like it is going to be 12 x 7 or 12 x 8. We may even go bigger than this. And it will probably be a lot deeper too. I just have to convince my brothers to help dig this one.

mini excavator gotta love them. usually about $250 per day, and you could have it done in one day easily.

Or save on the cost and hire a bunch of friends to come around and help, 6-10 bodies will dig it in a day no problem, all you'll owe them is a return favor. Good luck with the dig

Is it dug yet?

J/K. When is this thing getting started?

Probably not for a while. After everything had melted and the weather was getting good, we got a foot of snow dumped on us. It looks like it's going to be started in May, but who knows for sure.
