Last week, I got some coral and it came with tons of baby stars!!! I hope this vid works.
 
I guess it didn't work! Here's a pic. How many serpent stars can you find?

the one thing i miss about reeef keeping is all the freebies you get when buying corals and live rock

Like it was said, benifit of reefkeeping, the freebees. Also the bane, some of the small stars you are experiencing are obligate corallivores. That is why you get them with some corals. They also reproduce prolifically. If a single arm is left they will regenerate. Some get attacked by fish or other inverts, get sampled and spit out. @ individuals from the one.
