This isn't a hujeta is it?

I live in CA, so I know gar (true gar atleast) are illegal. I went to my LFS and asked for a hujeta, I didn't know what they looked like of course. 10$ later and a car ride home I realize my "hujeta" is a florida gar. I called up the store telling them this and they said "no returns". I'd rather not kill a fish thats perfectly healthy and has plenty of room.


I talked with a fish and game warden at a lake, they told me that as long as I'm no where near a body of water with this thing then they see no harm.

How hard will it be to get this fish off of live food? I only have 300 .5" convicts.

This makes me look really dumb, I feel really dumb too. I don't understand how LFS's can sell illegal fish. I'll see if I can find a home for it, if not I'll need to get some clove oil.
I wasn't expecting much hostility, but I suppose its my fault for not knowing what it was before buying. Tomorrow I'm going back to the store and am going to find a way to return it somehow.
 
To late it is on the internet. Also every American who sees this and doesn't report it could be charged. Not sure on the law down there but I know that up here you can be charged.
 
dude, you got a crazy good score...I would have just smiled and kept my mouth closed. Here is what you do, find a pick of a Hjueta online and then post it on here along with "oops, turns out I was wrong, it is not a florida after all"
 
OR I could not get in trouble and do the right thing and either kill it or demand a return.

I don't want to mess with the law, even for small things.

I'm not a advocate for killing healthy and innocent fish, I'll go back tomorrow.

Super dumb of them for selling me illegal fish, and super dumb of me for not knowing what illegal fish look like.
