But as far as being stung goes, is there a way to clip the stinger? Not remove, just trim it down so there is no point? After reading the stories of being stung, I wondered about the rays at Stingray bay; with all the people touching and feeding the rays I saw no signs warning against being stung. I began to wonder if they trimmed the stingers...

Yep, they use regular nail cutter to trim some of the stingers until it's quite short and blunt?? I received my all my rays in that condition , they say it's much easier to do that rather than putting a hose, all this prior to shipping.

all the rays in stingray bay have there stingers removed professionally.... and resorting to why you would want to do it... it would just stress them out of you take them out to cut them or remove them... tubing is a bad idea as well... causes infections I understand the need during shipping but once the ray is in a tank.... let it be...

Usually touch pool rays have the barbs trimmed back. Removal is something that is a touchy subject. It's not a clear cut sugery, and many don't live afterwards or suffer from other issues.

Trimming is not something I personally like seeing done. We don't pull teeth out of dogs so they are 'safer' do we? The barb is part of the animal as far as I'm concerned. Dealing with the safety aspect of it is part of owning one. I understand the need for that action in touch pool areas.... but I also see that all we are doing is encouraging the public to go out and touch rays if they see them in the wild... and that's just dumb.

I really don't see the point in stressing the animal out just so people can put their hands in with it.

ditto, just don't try and pet them. just be careful and move slow around them if you must be fiddling in the tank at all.

I have accustomed my rays to hand feeding with the strictest of rules. No one ever touches the ray, the ray initiates. No one ever grasps the ray. No one ever touches the ray near the eyes or anywhere behind the eyes. Touch is limited to the very front margin of the rays disk and only during feeding.

I haven't even come close to being stung or startled any of my rays with this approach. Just be cautious.
Respectfully,
FireMedic.
