ok well i noticed alot of you guys use clay pots in your tanks, is there a reason for it?????? im going to be setting up a bigger tank for my rd, and was woundering if any one has any tips???
The pots function as caves . . . it's not something that's necessary, but it'll help the fish feel safer and also give it some place to establish its territory. as far as the set up goes, just do that you want. You can have pink gravel with some retro lighting for all you care. There is no right way to decorate a tank. but you do have to let it cycle for at least a few days if not a week. Depending on how much old fish water and stuff like that you can put in the tank.
Clay pots= Cheap caves and spawning sites. If it were me decorating the tank I would try to make it as natural as possable. Smooth rocks, normal looking gravel, a few plastic plants and a cave. Keep large decor to a minimum so the fish has enough swimming space and avoid sharp objects.
I've always had good luck buying black pvc tubing from home depot, I think its like $4 for 2 feet of it. Just depends on the diameter you are looking for. You could even purchase the tubing, and if you don't like the look of it, spread a nice layer of silicone over it and put some of the bottom gravel on it so it looks more natural.
