i moved to fl in 06 and have been dipnetting since 08 and unfortunately my neighborhood is full of cane toads, so i RARELY see anything i want to, such as snakes
black racers, ringnecks are around sometimes, but other snake species seem to have disappeared, minus the ONE garter snake ive found
one of the biggest downers for me was that i, till this day, hadnt even SEEN IRL, my favorite amphibian
so im walking along a creek in my neighborhood (which was only about 2ft deep at the deepest part right now) which was the first place id ever seen cane toads in mass, and sure enuf, despite the heavy winter, there were about 5000 of their tadpoles
so im like wow...... i guess the 5 turtles (4muds and a red belly) i caught in about 5min there just ignore them
so i went up to this pile of concrete bricks next to the creek which hold a drainage pipe, id found a tiger beetle once, and a bullfrog another time under the one i usually flip over, but this time, i got what i DID NOT expect
a foot long two toed amphiuma, which was sitting in the mud under the brick......... it was disbelief
most exciting catch of my life, ive dipnetted probably 100+ i never caught one........ ive never caught a siren either, but ive seen them in captivity, but this is my first irl amphiuma
im currently keeping it
