Ok, I got the 55 sw tank, with just the normal power filter. My subtrate is sand from the river, so just normal sand. The problem I am having is that everyonce in a while, something will swim right next to the intake of the filter and will cause the sand to fly up and get scuked into the filter. Then it makes a horid sound that can only be gotten rid of by taking the filter outside and shooitng in water to allow the sand to flow out. The space between the intake and the sand is about an inch. Is there anyway to prevent the sand from going in the filter, like I mean is there some mesh I can buy to act as a strainer? I have put rocks underneath it and shells to try to keep the area free of sand. But it never holds, something will find a way to make the sand fly up and then its *crnkksshhhshshscrcccrnksdhshshshs*
Any info would be appreciated...

Sponge or a wrap of thin open cell foam around the intake.

If you cant move the intake a really cheap soluton would be to use a girlfriend or wifes old panty hose. Cut it up wrap it around the intake and then rubber band it. Only down side is that it will only let the water flow throu and nothing else. This is also a good trick if you ever have baby fish that you are afraid may get sucked up! :D

Usually when you get a new filter and look through the booklet they will let you know how many inches above the sand should the intake be to avoid this problem. On average the intake should be 3+ inches above the sand. You probably should consider cutting the intake half way…

One hint on using Gr8karmas solution, make SURE she is not wearing them at the time!

Ha, thanks for the feed back, I'll try to find the sponges. If that doesn't work I will get myself a girlfriend and then, use her pantyhose, but making sure shes out of them ;) . Then I will try cutting it.

i used the lining of my swim trunks for keeping the fry alive and it also keeps sand out i just scrunched it into a ball and shoved it on the intake , seemed to do the trick
