I am a strong proponent of dither fish in cichlid tanks, or other species tanks that require dither fish to aid a comfort the main focus species.
So when I caught this tetra in the river a few times along with Astyanax species, I thought it might be interesting addition, its from the genus Brycon, here in Central America, known as the Machacha. The one below is about 6", considered an omnivore with a predominantly herbivorous bent.

It gets quite large (over a foot), and seems almost as territorial as the cichlids in shares the tank with.
Over the last few weeks as it gained in size, it has harassed and led to the death of all other tetras in a 6 ft tank, except 1 Astayanax so farIMG_2643.jpegIMG_3853.jpegIMG_4027.jpeg
, and tends to search that tetra out to relentlessly harass. Those are inches notched out above

Found this didn't realize so many brycon species

Yes, many species are scattered all over the tropical, and subtropical new world, almost as common as Astyanax.
I haven't been able to put my finger on the taxonomic idiosyncrasies of which species mine are.
B guatamalensus seems to be an almost catch-all version of a species name.
The other I get from my limited Taxonomic charts is B behreae found in the eastern Pacific area, where mine were found.
B chargensis is found on the Atlantic slope of the country, so it may be as simple as a lot of cichlid taxonomy, broken down by location..
