It almost doesn’t feel real. I’m 29 and have been in the hobby since a small child. Everybody always said that discus were so hard to keep a nobody would touch them and warned me not to because they require too much cares what people would say. It was like there was a stigma against them lol. So I never purchased discus.. until my fiancé fell in love with them and then joined the hobby. We purchased a 90 gallon with a built in sump had the ph at 6.5 and everything like I read online and at simplydiscus.

Anyways I did all of that. Shortly after I accidentally wiped out all of my beneficial bacteria by adding a chemical called pH down to adjust my ph. It adjusted it to low enough to where it killed all of the bacteria like less than 5. And all of the discus survived all of that and the recycle of the aquarium... I thought we were going to lose them all. Weeks later.. today they are thriving and pairing off in regular tap water ph 7.8 with nothing else but prime added to the aquarium. I’m in shock lol. What about everything I read online? According to water parameters I can get buy with twice weekly %50 water changes. As they continue to pair off I’ll cut the shoal size in half and decide which ones to keep. We’re in love with them.

Anyways I was doing everything just like I was told to do everywhere online. And then I am today, realizing they are best if just left alone and fed in clean, warm water water. I’m so attached to them, they all have so much personality and are very interactive with us. I absolutely love them. Who woulda thought.. ‍♂

Rant over lol, anyways just thought I’d share my experience and setup.

Let me know what you think, this is my first time with discus!

The pictures alter the actual color.. it’s a lot brighter in person for some reason. We use a lot of blues and reds because they bring out the colors in our fish.
