This wood is driving me crazy.

I recently set up a 125 gallon tank. I got 3 large pieces of wood for it at an LFS. The guy at the store said that it was grape vine. I asked him if it would float, and he said no. He was wrong. I talked to another guy about it, and he said it would take about a month to become water-logged enough to sink. Is this correct? Anyone have experience with grape vine?

I had one piece in the tank still, weighed down by a rock. I just noticed today that there was a white, mossy, spider-webby type substance growing all over the piece of wood. What is this white stuff?? Can I prevent this stuff from coming back when I eventually put all the wood back into the tank?

Please Help!
 
I have grape vine in my 55 and it only took a couple days to sink...

I never could get the white fuzz to quit growing. I eventually gave up and threw it away.
 
my pieces grow this white fuzz, but it seems my MTS's eat it.....or maybe my yoyo's i jsut no it goes away.
 
i never seen any white fuzz on my wood.. but i do see a lot of white dots after the wood is in the tank for a few days.. and then they all disappear after a week or so... maybe the water is dirty?

The water is not dirty. I have 2 xp3s going and the tank has only been set up since Thursday. I have some fish in there but I used media and lava rock from another tank to seed with bacteria.
