Thorichthys aureus

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
they are a mildly agressive fish, grow to about 6", they have some really great colours freshwater, pH bout 7.5 from central america. omnivore so will prob eat your plants. really nice fish

i have 1 and its a very nice fish. It had parasites for the longest time but its looking good now. Keep the Temp just slightly lower at say 78-79 and keep them with compatible tankmates. I feed mine spirulina now mostly cause i had alot of trouble with bloat. They seem to do best when they are in charge of the tank, don't ask me why. I keep mine with A. Panamensis, spinosismus and C. Nanelutous. Keep up with water changes, watch the diet and you should be fine.

I'd keep the temp even lower, going no higher than 76 F. any higher and their health will decline. this is true of all of the helleri group of Thorichthys.

also, what you feed them isn't as important as is how much you feed them. they will get bloat from overeating. for instance, if you're keeping a group together, one male will emerge as the dominant of the group. he will wind up eating more than his share at feeding time and if this happens for an extended period of time he will get bloat and most likely die. then another dominant male will emerge and the same could happen again. it is important to feed all over the tank so that each fish will get its share. also, I'd feed small portions several times a day as opposed to larger feedings only once or twice a day.

water quality is important as well. the water should be kept as clean as possible with excellent filtration and frequent water changes. also, several Thorichthys come from rivers so you might give thought to adding a powerhead or airstone to make sure there is enough oxygen in the water. :)
