I recently purchased 5 of these guys from a lfs , They are very aggressive towards each other and I am now down to 3 is this type of aggression normal? I currently have the ellioti in a planted 40 breeder. they are housed with a school of rummynose tetras and a school of dwarf rainbows, 3 roseline sharks , some zebra loaches, 3 siamese algae eaters, 3 panda garras, and 2 gold gouramis. Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated

Most cichlids have potential to kill off tankmates and/or each other during the pairing process.if you did end up with a pair, i think many of the other tankmates will be killed also.you're probably overstocked

Yes it is normal. They are the most aggressive of thorichthys sp. IMO. I had a huge male that took over my 150g. The other cichlds were larger like a JD, robertsoni, and syn. I ended up getting rid of him. He was 7".

This is an interesting topic. I've been thinking about getting a few Thoricthys species and maculipinnis is one of them. The others on my list are pasionis, helleri, and aureus.

I had pasionis but wasnt patient enough because they take a while before they breed i have heard about two years so i sold them but wish i never did that
