Last night was our fish club's monthly meeting and auction. The speaker was Rusty Wessel speaking about Central American cichlids. He had brought some fish to contribute to the auction some of which were the T. Maculipinnis Dos Canos. I won the bid so now I'm the owner of 5 very young Maculipinnis. I have Meeki but have never kept these before so I thought I'd start a log to track their growth and progress.

They range from about 3/4" to a little over an inch. They're currently in my 20 long qt along with 5 sterbai cories which I also picked up. Got them acclimated without any problems. This morning they were all doing well and out exploring their new home.

Here's a quick pic I snapped last night while they were still in the bag.

Congrats. I need to keep an eye out for him to come back to the Midwest. He always brings some great fish for auctions. :)

Nice score. Good luck.

I've found them to be very rough on each other even in a 225. The breeding pair took out their conspecifics. Give them lots of cover to escape each others attention to reduce the aggression.

They are absolutely gorgeous when grown.

Maculipinnis are known to be the most aggressive of the thorichthys group.Still could work though with plenty of decor and line of sight breaks.Beautiful fish though.I wish you luck and look forward to updates.

Thanks for the tips. Yes, any info and experiences anyone wants to share is greatly appreciated. Would also love to see pics of everyone's fish as well.

From what I understand Maculipinnis and Ellioti are thought to be the same fish? Any insight on that?

Just picked one up from my LFS. Was really jonesing for a new cichlid and since this is basically a tricked out firemouth I figured ti would mature (and grow) slowly. It's in quarantine right now, but I plan on keeping it with my angel fish in a 29 until it grows out enough for me to put it in one of my 40 breeders. For anyone familiar with T. Maculipinnis, will this setup be okay for the next six months or so?
