Are any members keeping Thorichthys meeki (firemouths) as dithers? They seem so underrated. Beautiful colors, no thread, constant activity etc etc.. If the "goal" of a dither is a distraction, they seem perfect for the job. I am considering picking up a group and would like to know any first hand experiences from anyone who may have tried and would recommend for or against it.

I really don't lkie SD's so I am researching a few other options, nothing urgent, no "help" thread coming lol.. all my fish are juvies.

I used to have a whole bunch of firemouthes as dithers. worked like a charm, but ended out with them not growing fast enough to be good dithers for the bigger fish.

Thanks for the feedback bro. I know they are really common but I really like them the more I see them. I should also point out these are more dithers for my wife than the other fish.. She is a sucker for pretty colors and personality.. She got me hooked on them :screwy:

I was using the orange variant of Herotilapia multispinosa as dithers. Non-aggressive, active, and pretty colors. Plus they stay fairly small, maybe 4 - 6". If you can get firemouths that aren't particularly pushy, I don't see why it wouldn't work.

I always use other cichlids as dithers. My objective is usually to help bring out shy fish, though, rather than break up aggression or distract other fish.

Didnt work for me ime nothing beats silver dollars for the purpose of a dither no personality or color however

Firemouths were great dithers for me, its only when they pair up is when the point of having them as dithers was thrown out. LOL Overall, they're not very aggressive but they do grow pretty slow.
