Its been discussed before that as the fish get bigger the tanks typically get smaller. Example a neon tetra in a 10g has more room than a silver aro in a 300g.

I was wondering, what are thoughts on fish posted here like nile perch and barramundi? Does everyone posting these have a custom 5-10,000 gallon tank? I read all the time about people getting the rundown about aros and RTC's needing bigger tanks, but what about these even more demanding specimens?

It scares me to see some of these. Niles, barramundi, ARAPAIMA. There are a very, very small few here that can house these, yet there are dozens and dozens keeping them. I keep by the rule that if you don't have a permanent tank for it RIGHT NOW, don't buy it. The only exceptions to that rule are the guys that have the money to just up and buy larger setups (or build on an addition to their house for the pimas). Rtc, tsn, pbass, pacu (list goes on and on)....far too many people have them that won't be able to house them. I feel the same way about fish that can't be kept due to poor judgement in purchase, as I do dogs.....makes me very unhappy.

Agreed but still there are people that will house these fish. I personally have a TSN and RTCxTSN but I am keeping them in a 585 where they should be able to stay for at least two years then I have hopes of building a 1300gallon tank. that's got a massive footprint. Not saying it will get done but that's the plan for now. If I move plans will change but for now i'm staying here. hell who knows I mightnot have any fish in two years.

unlike RTC and arapaimas, barras and niles tend to not grow as fast.
they usually reach about a foot in their first year and take very long to even reach their max. size.

Yeah, I desperately want an arowana, polypterus endlicheri, and an aba aba knife fish. Fortunately I know better, and don't have the tank for any of those, or a big enough house for that matter.

The worst i've done is keep a variety of juvenile mid size fish in a 20gallon for a few months in preparation for a 75 gallon I didn't have yet (but now do)

Totally agree. There are those who have a plan and CAN stick to it. I'm just saying the majority have no clue what they're going to do as they grow.

No matter how slow they grow, you still have to be able to house them full grown.

Same old argument. Don't buy the fish less your willing to spend the money to care for it. I buy what i want and then i pay to house it. But you are right some people buy fish or any animal for that reason without knowing whats needed for life. Fish and lets say birds and reptiles easily grow very large and require large amounts of money to house and care for. Let alone the fact that some fish live 20+ years some birds 60+ years and some reptiles not only get huge but live for 100+ years. To me i love cars and i love fish so i spend away. My wife loves fish and horses so she gets what she wants for both. O and she likes birds last one set me back 1500 and will probably end up with are daughter once we are long gone as her new baby conure will live at least 60+ years with the proper care.
