What are your thoughts on feeding dog food to fish. Is it okay as a treat or should you never feed it. I read that the fish can metabolize the animal protein if you have high water temperatures (78+). I don't feed my fish dog food but I was wondering since it's high in protein and fat would feeding it to my female cichlids once in a while promote egg development?

Theres a breeder close to me that feeds all his fish dog food and catfish food. He told me to buy some to give to the Africans i bought from him but they seem to take Hikari cichlid gold just fine. I am pretty sure he just uses it because of the value he can get a 50 lb bag of dog food for.

There was a thread just like this one i saw today...

If I see another dog food thread I'm going to punch something.

Dog food is for dogs.

Haha calm down bro. I was just wondering because I keep on hearing contradicting information on terrestrial animal protein. Some say its fine for tropical fish, some say it's horrible, some swear by beef heart. I was thinking if beef heart is ok then wouldn't dog food be ok as a cheap treat. I like to feed my fish as many things as possible to give them the best diet possible (shrimp, fish fillets, different brands of pellets, different kinds of live and frozen worms, crickets and meal worms)

Also I was just thinking that terrestrial animal protein can't be that bad otherwise large carnivorous fish wouldn't go after small animals that fall in the water (birds, small rodents etc.). I know fish are opportunistic but if the animal didn't have any nutritional value they wouldn't waste the energy going after it right

Nurtition aside wouldn't dogfood be pretty messy for feeding? Unless you are buying the premium stuff(which would negate the idea of saving money) most dog and cat foods are high in cornmeal or flour and would go mushy pretty fast in an aquarium. if you've ever had a cat or dog drop food in it's water dish I'm sure you'll see what I mean.

I wanted to try, but my dog would get jealous :(

Him ignoring me when I took the dog food out and hold it above the tank.
Didn't throw in in the end, gave it to him.
