What do you guys think about college/university? Give me your honest opinions.

-Is it a waste of time?
-Does it cost too much?
-Do you think there are many useless classes college students have to take to get a degree in a field that doesn't even require that class?

Please include any other thoughts about college.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I think college isn't a waste of time because it will benefit you in the future. I have seen many of my family members and also my parents go through college and university and have succeeded after finishing school. I do feel college is expensive but, I am willing to pay what ever amount the tuition is. I do not qualify for financial aid because my parents make over the norm. All classes I took and books that were bought all came out of my parents wallet. I feel there are many useless classes college students have to take to get a degree in a field that doesnt even require that class. I am currently trying to get a degree in fire science and a class that is required for me to take is philosophy. I feel that philosophy has nothing to do with fire science.

I only have a few more semesters left of community college before I can transfer to a four year university. I have been looking long and hard to see which school have a fire science program and have found a few. My top choices right now is UCLA (University of California Los Angeles)and ASU (Arizona State University). If those two do not work out I will go to CSU Sacramento which is closer to home. Reason for me going to schools that are more than 100 miles away is because I want to experience the real college life of staying in a dorm or renting an apartment. Another reason is because I want to see if I can make it on my own with out my parents support, because almost all my life they supported me financially and academically. I am currently trying to find scholar ships and a job to help my parents pay my tuition. They have turned me down on helping them pay my tuition, but I feel it is my duty to help them pay and later in the future take over the full payment when I have a steady income.

Basically dude it comes down to you finding the right uni and then once there getting in with a good group of mates get that set and uni just rolls buy....

I dont fully understand how funding and fee's apply to uni in the usa but here thats the other big consideration is how much you owe back when you are working....

And the other option is figuring equivilant qualifications available in either less time or less costs.... its just options that worth considering.... for example a BA degree in graphic design in the uk is equivilant to a hnd but a hnd you can do in two years n for only about £1700....

Ive been to uni and ive then gone back to do equivilant qualifications to expand my cv. So i can appreciate both aspects of the choice. certainly for the social aspect every1 should try uni even if it dont work out....

pre reqs are a bunch of BS. Being a Biology BS major, i dont think its necessary for me to take a fine arts class, multi cultural class, etc. just put me in classes thats needed to get me in to med school. waste of time? the first four years are a waste of time, because once im up there, i pretty much forget or dont use what i learned the previous years.

IMO, degrees are totally worth it. You just have to take the right approach to it. The classes may seem pointless, but you can always get something useful out of them if you want to. College is about what you make of it, not what they force you to learn. Remember, it is different than high school where it is mandatory to go. College, you go because you want to.

I costs me roughly 30K to finish up all of my degrees. Work covered some of the costs. ASS Management, AAS Logistics, Transportation & Supply chain, BA Management, MBA. Since completion, I figure that I've nearly doubled my salary and can honestly say it was because of the degree. I would have never gotten the chances that I did without it.

It really depends on what you want to do. Certian careers are impossible to get into without a degree, some require post grad degrees, others are easier with a degree but don't require it, and with others a degree is worthless. It really depends on what you are doing as a career.

What are you wanting to be?

Honestly if they make enough and want to pay for it let them. Pass that on and pay for your kids' colleges.

Gen Ed classes can still be useful. I think certain classes should be required. I wish I had taken more IT classes, a web design class, a couple business classes, etc. But I didn't. I wouldn't put Philosophy on that list, but you never know what is going to open up a whole new world to you.

It costs too much. Like everything else in corporate America it is just an excuse for someone with a lot of money to make even more at the expense of people with less money. They shouldn't be called Universities, they should be called corporations because that is exactly what they are.

I would say that the Philosophy and Ethics classes are useful. They content may not be all that great, but those classes are about teaching critical thinking and learning how to be objective. Those skill are valuable if used correctly.

college is a big scam. dont waste your time.

Have you talked to them to see what they require and if they will pay?

I work with student loans, parents, and students all day. I have had graduate students ask me where a stamp on an envelope goes, and where they need to sign a check.

It's almost impossible NOT to get into school today.

IMO, it's not worth it. Why are you paying someone to read to you something that you can read yourself? OOh, you get a fancy "degree".. are you telling me that piece of paper is really worth the thousands you pay in?

Everything I want to know, I go and learn it myself. Buy the book, and read it.
