Given up on the carbon filters because it going to cost me way too much money in filters each year. Basically I've been told I would need a 3 stage filter setup and to expect to change the filters 4x a year for about $120/Year cost. It's just cheaper to dose Prime as 2 liters for $50 will last me several years.

So, my question is this:

I plan on adding 24 gallons of water a day which works out to about a 10% water change a week. (Sump has an over flow drain to handle excess water)

There are 2 ways to do this. The easy way or complicated way.

Easy Method:
Continually flow 1 gallon per hour into the main tank, and use an external feeding pump (Dosing pump) to add the required amount of Prime. Which would either be .1ml per hour or 2.5ml per day in one shot.

The concern I have is that adding the prime to the main tank might might not be the most effecient way to do this. Which leads me to the complicated method.

Complicated Method:
basically use a 30 gallon tub to mix in the prime and water, then after a few hours of mixing drain it into the main tank.

What makes this complicated is the method of getting water in and out of there automatically with solenoid valves. Timer would turn on the inlet solenoid valve, I would use a float valve that would shut off the inlet flow when full. Next a timer would turn off the inlet valve and turn on the doser & mixing pumps. After a few more hours turn off the pumps, and another timer would then activate another solenoid valve to drain the tub. Repeat cycle forever.

This sounds like the best way to get rid of my chloramines and chlorine but there are just way too many moving parts to this setup and failure looks to be certain.

Thoughts? Comments?

You're basically describing Li's water change. He uses a Chemilizer dosing pump. But the difference is, the pump pulls the Prime and mixes it with the tap water, then sends it to the tank. No need to add Prime directly to the tank. Makes it easy!!

I was just thinking about your tank the other day. Actually, I was thinking about your brainstorming about more efficiently heating it...

Is 10% a week sufficient?

$120 for the filters, changed quarterly honestly doesn't seem all that bad for a tank of that magnitude. I'd sign up for that in a minute.

Sorry, I don't mean to contribute nothing of value... I just worry that any auto-dosing stuff or the time put into it would account for more than the difference in price for filters.

Yeah, I guess with that much water volume it's not going to be sporting nitrates above like .5 until about a month passes. I'd be curious to see the measurements on any random day in there...

I take it Naperville DOES use chloramine?

i honestly dont see 1gph doing any dent at all on a 1500g system, but i could be wrong. it seems like a good portion of that would just cover evaporation.

If you have chloramines in your water, your system can handle the addition of approximately 1/100th of the volume in untreated tap water every 8 hours or so.

When I had chlorine in my water, neutralizing wasn't a big deal for small water changes. Now that I have chloramines I have to neutralize for water changes, but I can top off my tanks without treating the water if I do it over time. For instance, I add .5 gallons of tap water to my planted 55 gallon tank every morning and evening when it needs water added.

You may be able to employ this knowledge in your system. It has saved me money.

DB - Yeah we use Chicago city water and it's got all the "Good" stuff in it.. lol

Pomatos - That's interesting info.. Thanks..

Dave - I use test strips so the numbers are not all that accurate Nitrate scale is starts @ 0 then the next step is 20 (Usually around 3 is my estimate now) Nitrites are usually 0 to .1. When I get some new test strips I will get some numbers hopefully. They should be here this weekend.

Mopar - Yeah I might have to scale up the GPH we will have to get it running and see I guess. Never paid any attention to the evap. I guess I should try to get a measurment on that.

Had no idea chloramine eating charcoal was that kinda loot.....

Glad I only have to deal with chlorine where the cheapy carbon filters seem to last for several thousands of gallons of water.

I guess at this point all I can do is ask for updates on the Characin pack in that tank.... lol
