I have 2 green and one red head sev about 4-5 inches. about a month ago i lost my large female and sence have noticed all my little sevs being real shy and hiding a lot not eating much either. any thoughts?
Are they the only tankmates? I took my large severum out and it was a female and the smaller one did the same thing but I have otehr cichlids in the tank. I think he felt secure around the female because she was peaceful adn the biggest fish in the tank.
Fish's death could've cause a new pecking order or the severums to think they are in a new environment or something.
probably need a little more info to help out. maybe some pics. what are the water parameters like? temperature, nitrites/nitrates, ammonia levels, etc? anything noticably different about their appearance? any tankmates added recently? it's very difficult to say what may or may not be wrong without knowing all these things, so any more info you give would be helpful
the water is all good still doing 50% changes weekly that was the first thing i guessed.water is at 78. they are in with 2 comon plecs a bristlenose and 5 tigerbarbs which they have been for about 6 months now the only thing apperance wise i noticed was my redhead doesnt have the color it used to and its a little banged up from freaking out everytime i enter the room but other than that ive got nothing... why i thought id trow it out on here.. thanks
Im not an actual owner of these severums but ive had experience with many other species of fishes through my year. And as for your severums maybe you should try to bring your water temperature up alittle bit to 82 degrees. And if you want add some aquarium salts into the tank. And you say their all shy after the larger female left right?Well maybe try to get some other dithers around in the tank and see what happens for a week or 2.See if anything progresses. And if they are all still shy maybe you should try adding a large cichlid thats not as aggressive at all but as peaceful as the severums. You have the same problem as I did with my 3 Jack Dempseys that was in a 90 gallon.1 large female or male and the others were 2 very shy males and well for me to get them to start coming out more and feel safe in it surrounding I added some dithers like tiger barbs but the thing with them is that they tend to be abit nippy at times with anyone smaller or bigger that it.So I went with some danios and other species of fishes.Well I hope you get your severums to be more comfortable to its surrounding later on.Just wait with patients.
The tiger barbs are in a small school and could be nippy outside their pecking order.. In larger schools, tiger barbs tend to be less nippy.
The redneck 'thrasing' into things from being spooked could be a combination of that actually happening, and the tiger barbs nipping at him.
Although you might not notice anything when you watch the tank (fish could be begging for food?), they might have aggression issues at night.. Also, the plecos like to suck on large broad-bodied fish such as Severums and Gouramis when they sleep at night.. Make sure the plecos are well fed.
Try different dither fish, like Black Skirt Tetras.. a school of 10+.. instead of the Tiger Barbs.. see how they re-act then..
Also provide lots of extra hiding spots, the more hiding spots the more secure the fish will feel and the more they will come to the foreground, as they realize they can quickly escape to a number of spots.
