I took a trip away from home for two weeks and my fish were being taken care of by my brother. I have been reading on how to increase kok size and what not. Some people have said higher alkaline water will increase kok growth. My tank did not have a w/c for two weeks, so when I got home I went straight to my tanks and seen the water was dirty. But what I notice was that the kok on all my fish was bigger and that even both of my females had a little hump. So I asked my bro what was he feeing them I have alot of different foods and he told me freeze dried shrimps and hikari pellets. I have ching mix and other pellets as well but the fish didn’t eat them for two weeks. Also back in the day I had a few of my buddies who kept Midas and red devils that did not do w/c every week and they koks on them were big as well. I even keep seven fish and a 55 a while back three Midas, two jags and two flowerhorns. All my Midas had mice size kok and they were five inches. I did a w/c about once a month if that, because I didn’t have time to because of school and basketball. I kind of only did a w/c when the tank looked dirty or my college roommates started getting on me about the smell. I know genetics plays the first role then next food and water quality but is having a higher ph level good as well? Or can you tell me has this happen to you or have you seen it, just would like to know your thoughts and opinions on what you think is going on here?

you answered it yourself "I know genetics plays the first role then next food and water quality." Some people prefer higher pH but from personal experience with water that comes out of my tap at 8 it hasn't done anything for my fish.

I recently added alittle crushed coral in the tank where my King Kamfa is. Is color is a little better but I haven't noticed any size in his Kok, but it's only been 3 days since I added the crushed coral

What do you mean it hasn't done anything to your fish? are you talking about the kok.

the same thing happened to me..i had to go away for a couple of weeks and i had my cousin taking care of my FH..the water was dirty by the time i got back but the kok was much much larger than it was 2 weeks ago i was actually shocked..the only thing he was fed was normal pellets and tat too once a day instead of the usual 3..i have no idea what happened

Glad im not the only one out here that notice this. They say you should do a 25% w/c a week. But i really want to know whats the logic behind the kok growing lager by living in water conditions that or not ideal for fish or they say are not ideal. Lets here what you think is going here experts?
