i just found a pool with THOUSANDS of these guys in the 3~5" range and because of the cold temperature, they're dying off. these guys are gorgeous, can they be kept in aquaria? i gathered about 20 of the dying ones for bait(now in my freezer) now i'm considering going back with a bucket and dip net and catching some for my tank.

as what was mentioned they need a cylinder tank, you can try any tank just dont release them ( which i guess if you are a fishermen youll keep them for bait :D) i kept some gizzard shad in a normal 10 gal that where about 1- 2.5 inchs. food would be an experiment frozen brine shrimp, flake food and im sure theres many other posible foods. keep them in a species only tank and experiment if i were you i would try to keep them. keep lots of flow/current in the tank basic info, no heater needed.

good luck post pics and have a happy new year

i was thinking of my 26g show, its got a sump and 600gph return, also its unheated and in my garage, probably in the 50s. as long as i don't put fish from any other body of water in the tank with them

lol i hope you know they can get up to 5lbs

i didn't find much info online(mostly i was looking for their lifecycles to see if they were andromonous) but what i did find said that they only hit 7". maybe you're thinking of american or gizzard shad?

I've kept threadfin shad before, I'm not sure if mine were the same species as you have but I kept them for several months in a 125. They ate hikari micro pellets, they make a great fast upper water fish but if kept long term would probably require a larger tank. I had 12 or so of them I caught as tiny juveniles in a local stream below a small damn. They ate well and were very active.

Gotta mention they arent super hardy in transport. They need to be handled fairly gently and use ALOT of aeration in your transport container. They wont last long at all in a bucket.

where i'm collecting them is only a 20min drive from my house. i've got a 180g that i'd love to put a nice school of them in but unfortunately i broke it down when i moved and don't want to set it back up.
