My LFS runs three 2217 on a 300 gallons tank heavily stocked with big fish (jack demseys, large common pleco...). They also run two power head to increase water movement. Is it sufficient ? They never had any issues with this tank for years.

There's you answer.

Is it efficient because each 2217 contains a little less than 6 liters of media, 18 total liters, compare to 6 for a FX5 ? An FX5 is moving 900 gallons an hour compare to 260 gallons an hour for each 2217 (780 gallons/hour total); the power heads compensing for the lower flow rate ? Can we say that three 2217 are equivalent to a FX5 ?

900gph for the FX5 is at the head with no restrictions and no media. Add media, Then the FX5 gph drops to 550-650gph. That being said, depending on what you are running in the FX5 the GPH will drop well below the suggested 900gph Fluval advertises.

That will all depend on the stock of the tank. IMO, bigger is always better. More bio media for the bigger canisters. But, if the three smaller ones cost less then a FX5 and the three smaller one does just about the same, if not more, I'd go with the three smaller ones. Just for the simple fact that there is more water movement in the tank with the three small one then of the one FX5.
