I’ve recently been doing some research on tropheus moorii, and found that it’s good to keep at least 12 together through out different websites. I was wondering why this is, if they don’t really school?

…. and depending on the tank size, 12 may not be enough to achieve that result.

Most would say most African cichlids do better with overstocking to spread aggression.

Trophs tend to be highly aggressive species to conspecifics.

If you look at threads on minimum tank size, most will say a 75 gallon upwards.

This is my third time with tropheus. The first two times I started out with 30 in case I lost a few - but lost none, so just thinned a few fish to reduce the number of males. This time I went with 20 Duboisi as I heard they were not quite as aggressive and it has worked out well so far.

It is easier to get rid of a few fish later than to add more tropheus if you did not get enough. I have heard said that if you start out with only 10 you will end up with one. Perhaps not too much of an exaggeration.
