would tiger barbs make good dithers? i have 5 haitiensis in a 55g and two have now paired up. i plan on selling the remaining 3 but want to add some dithers so they wont fight each other. i know tiger barbs wont work in the long run but are they strong enough to make in there while the haitiensis are young? the female is about 2.5" and the male is 3".

thats what i was concerned about. are they really that bad when it comes to fin nipping? right now they have started chasing the other 3 around so need to get rid of them before they stress and bloat. ive had my odos for about 4 months now with no problems. i feed them hikari bio gold, frozen krill, white smelt, and trimac fry. no bloat problems. do you think the tiger barbs will stress them into bloat?

i dont know about the bloat but yes tiger barbs are extremely nippy though IME if you have a big enough school (at least 6) then they mainly nip among themselves and not the other fish, i do love tiger barbs but you really have to have enough of them other wise they probably will stress out your haitiensis especially since they are a fish that is prone to getting stressed easily and getting bloat

then from my experience it would be ok because they should just bicker among themselves but i would keep a very close eye on them and at the first sign of a nipped fin on the haiti the barbs would have to be moved

The barbs may work, but as the above poster said, at the least sign of a nipped hait fin, or stress, I'd switch to something less aggressive. In the haits natural habitat, live bearers of the Genus Limia and Gambusia (any liverbearer that likes warm water would do) are common.
I also would not be hasty in getting rid of the other haits just to be safe. I would however, put them in a different tank . The size they are at now is not out of the bloat stage.

all great advice. If they start to bother them, get rid of the barbs. Cherry barbs are less nippy i think and giant danios may be perfect. Of course dont forget silver dollars, always a great dither. Good Luck!
