How many tiger barbs should you put together to limit fin nipping? I have 1 green terror 3" and 1 green severumn 5".

There will always be fin nipping. I actually have 5 of each of the three(Regular, Albino, and Green) you can have. The more you have the less they will fight because they won't be able to focus on each other. Atleast 4-6 I would say. 6 especially since you have them with cichlids. I have them in my 125g with my F2 Male Midas and no probs. Just remember with cichlids that can change at any moment. I just am lucky to have a fat, lazy, and chill Midas.
Never had issues when I kept them in a proper school ... 12+ ... even then though, I wouldn't tempt them with angelfish for instance. But my sevs had decent sized, untouched trailers.
I've read 6 should be the minimal amount kept to reduce fin nipping.

I'm rethinking the tiger barb thing now. What would be a good alternative to tiger barbs? danios? Or something else?
Giant danios are a good alternative to tiger barbs.
I have both, my 55 has tb & my 125 has gd.
Ime gd are tougher than tb.
They don't look as good but last longer.
I have only lost one gd in the last three years vs many many tb.
