if i wanted to get a tiger fish how would i find one, how much are they, and how big do they normally get in captivity (max size tank needed). and if youre selling one or know someone let me know.

Hydrocynus vittatus grows to 40". It's also a powerful open water predator that requires lots of swimming space. To properly house an adult will require a large round pond in the neighborhood of 500 to 800 gallons.

so theyre not a great choice for an aquarium fish?

Are you referring to an African Tiger Fish or a Datnoid? Both are readily available on the west coast, not sure in penn town.

the tiger oddball refered to (Hydrocynus vittatus) which would be the african tiger fish. ive never seen one at an lfs in my area.

Tiger fish are very expensive. First you will need to save lots of money. Get a plane ticket for Africa. You will probably have to fly to England first. The best place to find them is in the Lower Nile River or Lake Tanganyika. They are great gamefish and very active when hooked and jump repeatedly. You'll find them in the fast water and will need strong tackle and wire leaders. Brightly colored flies work well. Live bait works well too.
How big is your aquarium??
They get up to 30-lb.
They are very difficult to transport from Africa. The freight will be very expensive.
If you can't afford to bring them back, please practice catch and release.

I have seen them around at a LFS in Delaware once. What part of PA are you in?

I'm in North-Central PA (Williamsport).

This is an uber old thread, but it was not refering to a Datnoid. At the time i was seeking info on the African Tiger fish (Hydrocynus vittatus). I think this was moved to the wrong forum?
