hey lfs has a nice big tiger sal about 10-12" and fat! i am wondering about care and lifespan for them. i don't want to pay $20, and find out, that after growing into a sal, from a newt, onlylive a couple monthes. hes cool. can he go in my 10? LFS had him in a half inch of gravel, with a cm or 2 of water extending above the gravel. saw him eat a cricket or 2
If he was on gravel, I'd pass. It can cause infections from abrasions. He should be on some kind of soil, these are called MOLE salamanders for a reason.
They live plenty long. Probably pushin' 20+ years. Japanese giant salamanders can live over 100, so yeah.
They make great pets if you mind hands-off animals (fish keeper, lol). Just buy one online at kingsnake.com or something.
i would agree with the previous post, They are really great hands off pets, Look into captive bred ones, They are used as bait in the great lakes region in the neototal phase, so a bait and tackle store might have these. But there are breeders that have regional sub species of the normal tiger salamander.
no abbrassions. i got to hold him. if they are a hands off pet, i will remember that. don't have the cash, and there things higher on my buying list for now. thanx for the info. i will keep an eye on him
12" that's a very good size specimen, me personally I would pick it up. They are great eaters and will eventually learn to associate people with food which is pretty cool. Another plus is you have gotten a chance to see this animal in person so you have a pretty good idea if it's healthy or not.
They're not hard to take care of, just 3-4" of eco earth coconut fibers ( I like to mist enclosure couple times a day to keep humidity and keep substrate moist) and a water dish, with 2-3 feedings a week.
From what I gather there has been no reports of captive breeding here in the US yet even though they have bred them in Europe. So every tiger salamanders you see will most likely be wild caught.
