I am assuming this is the same species as the "tig" catfish.

But my lfs has a 4-5 inch one for around $40 and was wondering if that was a good deal and if it could be housed with a JD, Salvini and possibly 1 or 2 more cichlids of similar size in a 90g.

I will be upgrading shortly as well but was just wondering if that stock would work at the moment.

The "Tig" I believe that is the "tigrinis". I'm not sure on the prices of TSNs, but they grow fast, and will out grow those tank mates from what I read on here. Once you upgrade, would the TSN be housed with the cichlids or separately?

the TSN will eat the cichlids and quickly outgrow a 90g and unless you plan on getting atleast a 400g I wouldnt suggest buying one

if the TSN is bigger then the cichlid then they will be his food.

1. not the same fish
2. that is a good price
3. i HIGHLY insist you look up tiger shovelnose before you even THINK of buying one. can get up to 5 feet.

my "Fluffy" a TSN.. which I've had about 1 month now. at 2.5" ate a 5" aba aba knife.. and is now pushing 6" already and eats fast as I can toss food in the tank it seems... may work w/ the Cichlids for a few monthes.. but after that. doubtful. TSN's grow fast and are very predetory imo, not a scavenger. 40$ isn't a bad price.. but neither is it a "great" one either. I got fluffy for 25$ as a special order at the LFS.

definately not an "impulse buy" fish by any stretch of the imagination. He is a fun fish to watch, and almost always active.

^ i agree

TSN is not a tig, as said above. They are very timid fish, hard to grow past 10" if very young, i think the cichlids will pick on him tha much that he will end up dying anyway, so maybe not a good choice of fish to put with cichlids, unless ofcourse you have another tank to grow him out in??? I do that with all my cats, they go up in stages and end up with the big fellows when they can fight back  hope this helps.

Good luck what evre you decide ;)
