Bought a 5-6" Tiger shovelnose on Tuesday. We've been adding Shrimp pellets to tank but can't tell if catfish is eating them. He's in with a 3" Oscar.

We would prefer not feeding it live foods. Any suggestions?

Try buying frozen smelts or shrimp from the supermarket. Thaw one out and try that. Mine was stubborn at first and I had to impale a small feeder and piece of shrimp on a clear 1/4" air line tube and wiggle it in front of him. They eventually get the hint and you can delete the feeder. Mine dont eat any kind of pellets, I have two 3" little guys I have to train, they are still eating black worms and guppies.

Good luck....

ALMOST FORGOT......... I hear these fish get pretty big.....I hope you have at least a 40 breeder. These babies grow to 8-12' in the home aquarium you know. :D

SORRY... I couldnt resist.

Mine was smaller than that and loved cut frozen fish and night crawlers. He did not eat for 1 or 2 weeks and when he did he has never stopped. he is about 6-7" now. He might get hungry and eat the oscar though...beware

Did you thaw the fish first? How did you feed it? Did you have to place it in front of his mouth?

I know, I was actually trying to be funny. Everytime someone buys a large catfish everyone usually chimes in on the "do you know how big they get ?? they get ...... " And I was kidding on the 40 breeder too.

It was funny while I was typing it
