now i see just how serious everyone is about needing a tight lid when raising an arowana. my 7" lept through a hole that could not have been much larger than himself last night (a hole that was cut to fit the filter) and he landed in the sink i guess. thats where my girlfriend found him this morning. sucks, i was just starting to like the little guy.

Yes keeping a tight lid is one of the most important parts of aro keeping. I installed some netting over half my tank's canopy so that if he jumped it would just cause him to bounce back. Keeping an aro inside the tank is one thing but sucsessfully keeping the aro in the tank while avoiding it to harm its self on the tank's top is a whole other. Then the other half of the tank is covered by a plexiglass lid, in case the aro hits it it won't break like glass. I also painted it black to help discourage jumping and theres locks installed on all my lids. To make sure they stay down. There's no point of an aquarium if your fish isn't going to stay in it. :)

What kind of aro did you have? I've kept silver, black and jardini, and notice that the silver and black are more prone to jump than jar's. Anyways sorry for your loss...I notice there are lots of silver and black aro babies in stock right now in the LA area for ~$10-20 if you're thinking of tempting fate again.

sorry for your loss..this happens to all sizes and ages.... tight lid..weigh it down... the one i have now is going on seven years... only because i do this... he would have jumped a long time ago... i preach about this... such a sad loss to lose one this way...

it was a silver. he had been a nervous wreck since the day i got him... he calmed down for a couple days, but then for some reason began acting like more of a freak than ever and never came back around. any time i would walk up to the tank, he would flip out.

im thinking if i try again, i will try with a jar. they seem to be a little more level headed. i just worry about the aggro level associated with jardinis

agreed. i felt i was fine. the lid was closed 100% other than the small awkward area between the top of the HOB filter and the bottom of the canopy (no more than 1.5" wide)

twas my first aro to ever keep. worked for about 3 months. lesson learned

bummer so sorry to hear of it

my aro is a nazi I went to put a net of feeders in the tank the other day and he tried to eat the net as soon as I put it in

the baby I just bought my daughter tried to eat a juvi severum and the aro is only 2 inches long lolololol

you should probly cover those small cut outs for the filter with masking tape ..
they always seem to have good aim when jumping out

yeah, and what makes me upset is that just like 2 days ago i was looking around for some cardboard or something to do just that. i ended up distracted and never finished the job. :(
