I was looking for someone with experiance in tigrinus catfish,
I see a very young one for sale that was a true tigrinus (not false one) but its lines were straight and I see ones with fancy lines on the internet. does this happen when the fish get older or is it that when a tigrinus has straight lines from birth it will always have straight lines?

Kind of explained it as well as i could, hope someone can answer me!

Thanks alot guys.

I tend to agree with Strollo22 but at the same time, I have never seen a baby tig with anything but straight lines. So, I am curious myself. My tig didn't make it past 12" (and his lines never changed but that is inconclusive) and I never have had another.

they may change slightly but what you see will be close to what you'll get in the long run. i have had discussions with other members bbout why some tigs have the vertical stripes and some have the more like a "maze" squiggly pattern. we kinda agree that there is 2 options 1: different collection points 2: sub species

All great answers, I was so curious as you never see any pattern but straight on young tig's, got to say if I could house one of these bad boys I WOULD!!

It is kind of a catch in this wording. All pimelodid catfish when young seem to start off with a pattern that is pretty plain. As they get larger the pattern seems to spread out and get more intricate. I will have to make a thread with pics to show what I mean. You cannot tell what type of patterning it will have as an adult from a juvie fish. Tigs can get 2'+. A small one may have just some straight lines. Notice as it grows that those lines stay the same size but more pattern emerges as they grow. I tracked the pattern on 3 different tsn, a rtc x tsn hybrid, marble catfish, marble x rtc hybrid, jur, ect. They all seem to do the same thing. Granted they are not the fish mentioned, but I have seen pics where people show their tigs at a young age with stripes and as they grow that section of stripes stays the same but magic happens as more of the pattern is revealed. Does this make sense? Hmmm......definitely need to make a thread and maybe a slide show explaining it if I can find all my old pics. So basically when very small may only have a couple of stripes, but as the fish grows the stripes stay the same size, and more stripes and pattern emerge as it grows. :) If it's too confusing just ignore me until I can make that thread lol. Will put it in my list of things to do. Anyone that has grown out baby pims to adult size will understand what I am saying I hope lol.

i bought mine at 9inch with a few vertical stripes and poor coloring. As it got larger its colors darkened and the stripes started to change. One side the vertical lines began to slant , the other they started to morph into a maze pattern.....here are pics at 16", the morphing began on its growth spurt (7inch in about 6 months). I feed prawn stuffed with massivore as much as it will eat once a day...

i can only speak on my experience with raising 2 separate tigs. both were bought at a small size 3"&6". both patterns were nearly the same when they hit the 18" mark with the only difference that the markings were larger and more defined. one tig had the straight vertical lines and the other had the squiggly lines. just my 2 cents
