It's only expensive if you place the cost of the fish over the joy of keeping the fish. I would say if the money is a concern, it might be a better option to drop some extra cash up front and buy one thats established, eating pellets/raw seafood, and healthy rather than getting a younger wild caught one that might not make it.
I don't have one of these yet, but from what I've read, they're more active at night. Moon lighting might be a good option to enjoy it more. Fact of the matter is, when the thing hits 12"+ its fairly hard for it to disappear in a tank.
in my experience: Tigs are only expensive if you buy from the wrong price, I have gotten some tigs for as little as 75 dollars. They are fragile when small but once they hit the 12" mark, they are very hardy. As far as activity, they are not the most active fish. They are nocturnal and mostly only are active during the day if they are being fed. They are one of the more docile monster catfish and I have kept mine with everything from bichirs to young aros and even big cory cats without a problem. They will eat what any other large catfish eat and can be pellet trained.
hope that helped.
Im in the same situation at the moment,i really really want a tig and the cheapest i can find is about 6" total length for about £150 or there is a 12" one on the classifieds for £275 english, and going by what you guys are saying and what ive read elsewhere on here we would both be better off forking out the extra for a big one, and like speshuled says when its big you can hardly miss it,so ive got to start saving more as i really want one and these seem to be the going rates for the different sizes.
Good luck in your search bomber.

I usually like raising fish as babies and I have an option to buy a 4-6 incher @ 140.00. Expensive I know. I have seen larger tigs for around 250ish and it might be worth buying them large but where is the fun in that? hm..... what to do.?
