Any possible suggestions on coaxing my tig to come out and be more active and eat a little more? He is always floating against the rear tank wall minding his own business. He is roughly 6-7" long including streamers. I was hoping to help fatten him up!

How long have you had him and what have you been feeding him/see him eat?

temp is a balmy 82, and the parameters have been in check for the past 4 weeks. I do 30-40% w/c about every 9-10 days. Always use prime.

My 180 Gallon Setup:

Equipment:

2 x Eheim Pro 3 G160's with Hydor inline heaters
1 Fluval FX 5
10 Watt LED Flood lights
4 x 36" Atinic Bulbs for moonlights
2 x Koralia 4 Powerheads

Substrate & Plants:

Carib Sea Tahitian Moon Black Sand
15 x Amazon Swords
7 x Jungle Vals
8 x Moneywort

Fish:

Blue Base Crossback - 8"
Indo Dat - 7"
Motoro Sting Rays (w/c, male & female pair) - 7"
4 x Clown Loaches - 4" - 6"
Tigrinus Catfish - 7"
6 x Geophagus Surinamensis - 3"
Red Blood Parrot - 5"
2 x Flagtails - 3" & 5"

just need more time is my guess. I don't think they are very active fish.

I've had him for maybe 2 months? I haven't actually seen him eat anything to be quite honest. He is always hiding, somewhere in the plants during feeding time. I usually try and make sure some of the pellets get tossed his way, or whatever fresh meat I cut up.

my usual feeding regime.

I switch it up every few days. Some of the staples are going to be stuff like NLS for the geos, and algae wafers for the clowns, so lets leave them out for now. The other fish (Rays, aro, dat) will all eat frozen shrimp and frozen tilapia. I have tried cutting it really small to make sure the tig can get it into his mouth cause it isn't overly big yet. I just never really see him going after food like my previous cats did (I've kept a Lima shovel nose, tiger shovel nose, and a RTC, and they all LOVED to eat and quickly learned when I came near the tank it was feeding time)

Help?

they need perfect water and decent current. i grew my first tig at a great rate by stuffing shrimp with a massivore pellet. they are very inactive fish, so i used a pair of tongs to place the food right in front of him. that way i saw him eat. i use this same method with my second tig and he is growing just as fast as the first one did. the first tig i had grew from 3" without streamers to 18" in about 9 months then slowed down from there. i think the new one will fair just as well. good luck hope this helps.

So I believe my water isnt the issue and I have two koralia 4's mid tank on both ends that should be providing decent current from both sides, ill try the tongs trick to see if it encourages him to eat.

I think/fear that it was fed live before you got it and the conversion is not always easy. Moreover, many report the conversion is very hard (not all report that). There is plenty written here on such conversions - it's a popular subject on tigs and jurs too.

If he continues and eventually looks like he is too thin and wasting away, you'll probably need to isolate him and try to get him to eat dead/prepared foods first before putiing him into community tanks. The herd instinct may help you in the community tank - it's a proven technique - but it, again, does not always work but only often/sometimes.
